Add a word

Type a word and look it up — the definition, part of speech, phonetics and synonyms come from Wiktionary, and if it has no example sentence one is pulled from the Tatoeba corpus instead. Everything stays editable before you save.

Daily new words

How many unseen words enter the rotation each day. Lower it if reviews pile up.

Pronunciation

Press P on any card, or the speaker button. Human recordings are used when Wiktionary has one for that word; everything else — phrasal verbs, idioms, anything multi-word — falls back to your browser's built-in speech synthesis, so all 500 entries can be heard. This setting is per device, since available voices depend on the OS.

Sync across devices

Optional. Generate a code here, then enter the same code on your phone and laptop — progress merges between them, card by card, newest change winning. Reviewing never waits on the network: everything saves locally first and syncs in the background.

This code is the only key to your data. Anyone who has it can read and change your progress, and it cannot be recovered if you lose it — save it in your password manager. The server never stores the code itself, only a hash of it.

Works with or without sync. A file export is the only copy that survives losing your sync code, so it's still worth doing occasionally.

How the scheduling works

Cards are scheduled with SM-2, the SuperMemo algorithm that Anki's scheduler grew out of. Each card carries an easiness factor starting at 2.50. Recall it well and the gap to the next review multiplies by that factor; fail it and the card resets to one day and the factor drops (floor 1.30). First two successful intervals are fixed at 1 day and 6 days. Original spec ↗
